Murray Robertson of Robertson Architecture approached us about designing a recycled timber floor for a new passive home,. We were keen to be involved in this thoughtful build on a challenging site. The house was cleverly designed to hover over, rather than be dug into the hillside, thus allowing daylight and natural ventilation to all sides. The living room dramatically cantilevers out and offers views down the gulley to the Pāuatahanui Inlet.

Recycled Rimu flooring from James Henry was the perfect flooring material for this home. Produced from timber reclaimed from demolished local buildings, our new from recycled Rimu flooring fits together cleanly just like new tongue and groove boards. The only sign of it’s former life is the attractive nail hole character.

Finishing the floor in a natural product with no red list items was a decision in keeping with the rest of the build. Rubio Monocoat Oil+2C in ‘Pure’ was used on the Rimu flooring and stairs to enhance the natural tones of the timber.
