Mixed-grade Rimu, Island Bay House Renovation, Wellington
Timber:
New wooden floorboards produced from recycled mixed-grade Rimu – 135mm x 19mm.
Details:
An extension and renovation of a 1920s home.
The existing floor in the house was Matai, with a mixture of Heart wood and Sap wood – some in good condition and some that had been eaten by borer over the years.
We suppied and installed mixed-grade Rimu floorboards as a cost-effective alternative to using Matai floorboards.
The floorboards were laid directly to new joists in an extension area by our customer’s builders.
The nail-hole character was enhanced with black filler, to highlight the character features in the floor.
Coating:
We sanded and finished the floor with three coats of Bona Naturale water-based polyurethane. Bona Naturale is designed to look like a ‘natural’ oil finish, yet has the durability and easy-care of a floor finished with polyurethane.
Unique Aspects:
There was a transition with the existing Matai floorboards at a doorway at the end of the hallway. The two timbers work well next to each other and don’t present as an uncomfortable contrast. A great result, both in being a cost-effective solution and producing a great looking wooden floor.
