Charley Noble – Recycled Red Beech

Home/Charley Noble – Recycled Red Beech

Timber:

Recycled Red Beech, 180mm x 20mm boards. Recovered from a Christchurch earthquake damaged building.

Details:
A character and hand-finished wooden floor in a heritage building adjacent to Wellington’s waterfront.

Builders LT McGuinness briefed us a recycled wooden floor that could have been the original floor in the building come back to us in a month with some options and samples.

We used Red Beech as being harder wearing than Matai, and the wider boards at 180mm wide stepped out from the usual 6-inch Matai boards.

The boards were hand sanded to randomly remove paint from the previous use. The coating is Italian Carver Primol flooring oil colour Cappuccino, followed by moisture-cured polyurethane. The oil enhances the Red Beech timber and the polyurethane provides for an easy care wipe-down surface.

The bar tops were made from recycled Matai floor joists, recycled from an old doctor’s residence and practice rooms in Masterton.

Unique Aspects:
It could have been the original floor in the building. The boards were laid leaving some lipping and the hand-done floor sanding ensured that the character was not lost to over-vigorous sanding.
