Prefab Function Centre – American White Oak Parquet

Home/Prefab Function Centre – American White Oak Parquet

American White Oak, Prime Grade, Parquet 980mm x 122.5mm x 19mm.

The owners of Wellington cafe Prefab wanted a unique and stunning floor for their new function centre and venue. We were referred to the Prefab crew by architects Studio Pacific Architecture, who were familiar with our work from previous projects.

The original plan showed large parquet pieces laid in a basket weave pattern. Discussions progressed and turned a little design and build the piece size was reduced slightly and a double-boarder designed and added. The parquet pieces have chamfered sides and ends to ensure the individual identity of each piece is retained.

Jeff Kennedy and Bridget Dunn, along with their colleagues Rob Wilkinson and Matt Hanna, kept us fully on our toes throughout the planning and installation. If you know these people you’ll know what we mean. We say this nicely as they were a great client to work with, they wanted something truly unique and cool, and they gave us the licence to create it for them.

The flooring was finished with three coats of moisture-cured polyurethane. This has brought out the natural beauty of the American White Oak.

Unique Aspects:
The building was a car repair garage for years prior to becoming Prefab. The concrete subfloor was far from level, had moisture issues and an iron-filing layer within the top surface of the concrete. We worked with this, taking a gnarly out of level concrete slab to a satisfactory subfloor to take the parquet wooden flooring.

They love it!
