Recycled Matai – Investment Bankers Office, Wellington

Home/Recycled Matai – Investment Bankers Office, Wellington

Timber:
Recycled Matai, 85mm x 20mm

Details:
Wellington architects Studio Pacific were commissioned to design a sophisticated fit-out of an upmarket office for their investment banker clients. They specified that the sunken breakout area and a stage area where to be in recycled Matai. The rustic natural finish was specified, nothing too manufactured and to look like it had been since the original building was built in 1918.

The substrate in the sunken breakout area is concrete and we laid an acoustic underlay system under the Matai flooring.  Detail work on the steps took days to complete – it’s a real challenge using gnarly recycled materials produce perfect mitre joins and precise negative detail finishing.

We also clashed cabinets adjacent to the stage with the same level of perfected detail.

The floor was finished with Carver Primol flooring oil that we import from Italy. The floor was hand sanded as using a traditional rotary sander would have ruined the natural character surface. We applied two coats of oil by hand.

The recycled Matai was recovered from warehouse in Christchurch which was demolished to make way for redevelopment (prior to the 2011 earthquake).

Unique Aspects:
The detailed finishing using recycled Matai timber, while retaining the un-ruined natural rustic character – a true testament to the patience and skill of our staff who worked on this installation.
